The cozy mill of Bocholt

The Front Luys Mill

Visit the mill and learn the story while enjoying a snack and a drink. The perfect stopover during a walking or biking tour.

The Voorste Luysmolen has not been used since 1965. It owes its name to Petrus Luy, the mill's first miller. The family name Luys is originally a field name. Many hayfield plots along the Abeek received the name of “Luijs” which means reed canary grass.

There also used to be a “Achterste Luysmolen” from 1602. This mill was unfortunately demolished in 1926. This was a fulling mill where fibers were compressed into a dense mass. Later, grain was also ground there. The mill has been rebuilt many times over the centuries. The Luysmolen is located along the Abeek, on the border of Bocholt and Bree.

At the end of 1995, the Flemish Land Company bought the mill, in order to restore it. The building and its surroundings are protected as a village sight. After the restoration, the management of the mill was transferred to the municipality of Bocholt.

Today it is a cozy inn where you can go for a snack and a drink. Ideal for cyclists, hikers, horse riders, nature lovers and other visitors to the Kempen-Broek Border Park. Next to the Luysmolen in Bocholt, you will also find a special hangout spot. Rent a hammock and enjoy a relaxing moment with the Abeek in the background.
